BAs and BACTERIA
Biogenic Amines (BAs) are natural contents in foods of plant and animal origin. Of all the many BAs, histamines, tyramines, phenylethylamine have a toxicological significance.
Bacteria of the group: enterobacteriaceae, are histamine producing microbes (The group Enterobacteriaceae includes Enterobacter, Escherichia coli, Klebsiella, Morganella, Proteus, Providencia, Salmonella, Serratia, Shigella, and Yersinia. )
HISTAMINE INTOLERANCE
There is increasing evidence that Histamine Intolerance (or: Enteral Histaminosis) is a major cause of food intolerance. 2-5% of all adults suffer from Histamine Intolerance (HIT). This estimate shows that HIT and Enteral Histaminosis is now a vastly more serious health problem than all food allergies put together!
Digestive problems (prolonged diarrhoea or constipation), bloating, stomach pain, heartburn, tension/cluster headaches, migraines, palpitation, low blood pressure, urticaria, eczema, hay fever and asthma can all be signs of a histamine intolerance (HIT) or a problem with other Biogenic Amines (BA) like Tyramines (very much connected with Migraines and Cluster Headaches), Other factors are: Salicylic Acid (“China Syndrome-MSG”), or Purines (wine intolerance)…
Incorrect diagnoses can lead to suffering for those affected (including the diagnosis of Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS, or IBS-RS).
RESEARCH AND EXPERIENCE
Biogenic Amines and Histamine Intolerance have been researched for many
years in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Spain and other European countries. Many experts (Allergy, Nutrition, Microbiology) are trying to force food manufacturers to put the amount of histamines on food labels.
Of course without success … so far.
From my experience I can say that in 40% of IBS-D, IBS-C, IBS-A, IBS-PI or IBS-RS a treatment which addresses a Biogenic Amine Intolerance showed good health-improvement rates.
Another figure: Nearly 100% of my patients suffering from IBS and/or combined symptoms (like IBS-RS with Migraines, Hay-fever, Asthma, Urticaria, etc.) who have seen conventional and complimentary practitioners have NEVER heard of Biogenic Amines. This is frightening. Even if practitioners have not learned the BAs and their health implications in schools or universities, there is enough research from labs, universities, health institutes, etc. available. (Examples at the bottom of this page).
SCOMBROID POISONING
Histamine Intolerance can go as far as Scombroid Fish Poisoning (scombrotoxism, scombroid ichthyotoxicosis), which means: the food has reached an extremely high level of histamines. And these are the symptoms:
·
Flushing
·
Palpitations
·
Headache
·
Nausea
·
Diarrhoea
·
Sense of anxiety or unease
·
Prostration or loss of vision (rare)
·
Diffuse, macular, blanching erythema (most common)
·
Tachycardia
·
Wheezing (generally only in histamine-sensitive asthmatics)
·
Hypotension or hypertension
“Most of the published literature suggests that symptoms are related to the ingestion of biogenic amines, especially histamine. Histamine is produced via bacterial decarboxylation of histidine and is normally present at levels less than 0.1 mg per 100 g of fish. In contrast, samples of fish that produce poisoning contain histamine levels of at least 20-50 mg per 100 g of fish. Serum histamine levels and urinary histamine excretion are elevated in humans with acute illness”. (John D. Patrick, Assistant Professor of Medicine, Department of Emergency Medicine, Harvard Medical School, Mount Auburn Hospital)
Fish most commonly affected are members of the scombridae family (tuna and mackerel) and a few non-scombridae relatives (bluefish, dolphin or mahi-mahi, and amberjack). A few additional species have been implicated, but they are of less concern because they are not commonly eaten.
SOME HEALTH PRACTITIONERS NEED TO CHANGE
It is about time that some practitioners should stop diagnosing so many sufferers with the usual “You obviously have a Wheat and Lactose Intolerance and a Candida and maybe some Parasites…” Yeah, right and of course do not forget to eat 5 portions of vegetables and fruit and avoid alcohol and coffee…:-)
And more good news: You cannot detect BAs with questionable "things" like VEGA machine or BICOM or any similar device.
READY MEALS
Where do we find a specific high level of Biogenic Amines? Yes… you guessed right: in READY MEALS.
A very good reason to avoid this sort of “food”, including the brands marketed by health practitioners, because it is not healthy. Period.
